We knew the folks at Marvel were looking at the long game, but this is just nuts. So, want to hear which future sequels could spawn even more spinoffs?
In a lengthy feature with Bloomberg Businessweek, the insanely secretive team at Marvel opened up the doors to explain their process and tell the story of the company’s growth into one of the most powerful film studios in the world. They also dropped some hints on future spinoffs.
It turns out that deep in the heart of Marvel Studios, president Kevin Feige has a map hanging on his wall that maps out the next 14 years of potential sequels and spinoff films. Seriously, can we hire Black Widow to break in there and give us a peek at that thing, stat?
It’s a little bit art, and a little bit science, but Feige says they’re just trying to take it one movie at a time and put out the best product they can to keep building toward the future:
“It’s like looking through the Hubble telescope. You go, ‘What’s happening back there? I can sort of see it,’?. They printed out a new one recently that went to 2028.”
Though the story, sadly, doesn’t reveal exactly what’s on the list — Disney CEO Robert Iger did reveal thatAvengers: Age of Ultron will introduce “new heroes” who could be “spun off” into their own line of films. Hmm, judging by that, it sounds like Marvel might have big plans for new additions Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
Iger also notes that the risky, interstellar adventureGuardians of the Galaxy could even lead to its own sequels or spinoffs, with Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket Raccoon all potentially set to break out with their own standalone films. That’s apparently part of a deeper plan to “replicate” the success of The Avengerswith other teams, something we’ll also see culminate with that Netflix deal and The Defenders.
